Sections

Sections allow you to divide your page into different topics - each with the option to create different combinations of layouts within them. When you start a section, you will be shown six different introductory layout options. Once created, you can create additional layouts within that same section as needed.

Since Gato is responsive (i.e., responds automatically to the width of the screen) your multi-column layouts will collapse into a single column for viewing on narrow devices, such as mobile phones.

Adding Sections

  1. Open the page you wish to edit
  2. Click Add Section. This will appear as a horizontal box in the content area of your website. If content already exists on this page, this will be found at the bottom or the page, above the footer. This box has a broken light green border.
  3. Choose the introductory layout you'd like to use
    • You can always add more after this, as well as rearrange layouts if needed.
  4. Selecting a layout will result in a green box around the selection. Click the Next button - located at the bottom right-hand corner of this window.
  5. A window will appear with fields for Title, Title Alignment, Intro Text, and Anchor. There is also a separate tab located at the top to enable background color. These fields are optional. Once this is done, select Save Changes.
    • The first field is the Title field. A section title always has to fit the context of the page and be a broad subcategory of the page title. For example, if your newly created page is titled "Food", a proper section title would be "Vegetables".
    • The next section allows editors to select Title Alignment. Would you prefer the title centered, or left aligned?
    • The next field is a Text box. This is not where editors want to go text-heavy. This text box should only include just enough text to introduce this section of the page.
    • Anchor. Web anchors allow links to point to specific parts of a website, rather than simply linking to a page. To learn more about anchors, please visit the anchors support page.
    • If background color on this section is desired, editors can find this option in the second tab located at the top of this window.

Deleting Sections

To delete a section, click on the section bar and find the delete option in the right-hand menu.

Caution: This will permanently delete any content within the section as well.

Adding Additional Layouts

  1. Find the section you'd like to add an additional layout to.
  2. Click Add Additional Layout. This will appear as a horizontal box located within an existing section of your page. It will have a broken yellow border.
  3. Click on the layout you'd like to use.
  4. Selecting a layout will result in a green box around the selection. Click the Next button - located at the bottom right-hand corner of this window.
  5. A window will appear with fields for Title, Title Alignment, Intro Text, and Anchor. This is the same box which will appear when a section is first created, except the title entered for a layout will be a subheading within the current section (if a title already exists)

Rearranging Sections and Layouts

  1. Find the section or layout you would like to move.
  2. Select the section or layout bar,  then find the Move option in the right-hand menu. (or double-click the 4-way arrow located within the section or layout bar)
    • Please note that sections can only swap places with other sections. The same principle applies to layouts, except they can only be swapped with other layouts within the same section.
  3. At this point, editors will notice that the section or layout bar will follow the cursor along the screen. Hover the cursor over the section or layout bar where you would like to move the selection to and click on it.
    • You will notice that when hovering over another bar, it will change color. For instance, a section bar will turn solid green, or a layout bar will turn solid yellow. This indicates that this is a compatible move. If this does not happen, this is because this is not an allowed move.
  4. Click on the section or layout bar where you'd like to move this section or layout to. This will move your content above the selected area, pushing all the other content down the page.

There are two other section types which can be selected - Mosaic and Collage. Please visit these pages to learn more.
